I am Sarah Holmes, the owner and creator of Maleia. I want to share my thoughts on beauty with you here, which includes art, jewelry and fashion.
I started making jewelry 13 years ago. Initially I made sculptures, which gradually got smaller and smaller. Once I understood form and design, I started using gemstones and sterling silver so I could wear the pieces as jewelry. It wasn’t long before people were buying the jewelry right off my body!
While working at a clothing boutique, I was approached by my boss, who noticed people kept trying to buy the jewelry I was wearing. She asked if I would be willing to make jewelry for the boutique. Of course I did! It was fun creating new pieces, and even more exciting when they sold, which allowed me to buy more materials.
Who knew it was the starting point of my jewelry career …
After a few months of selling, I knew I needed more technical training if I were going to get serious about making jewelry. I had moved back to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit my family. I signed up at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design for a ring-making class. I literally fell in love with the process. Time seemed to melt away in the studio. I couldn’t believe I had discovered the love of an art form that would become one of my greatest passions in life.
