Our Best Jewelry Care Suggestions

It is the worst feeling when you go to put on your favourite necklace or pair of earrings and they are looking dull, greasy or even tarnished! Even gold products can look unattractive over time if not cared for in the right ways. Here are a few ways to take care of your Maleia demi-fine and fine Jewelry pieces.

  • 14k gold-fill and sterling silver are very similar in how they are cared for and cleaned. Our favourite option to clean both of these products is with a soft jewelry cloth. After we have cleaned them we store all of our 14k gold-fill pieces in our cloth bags. Each piece of sterling silver gets placed in a plastic baggy with a sealed closure before adding them to the cloth bags; this helps to keep them from oxidizing. This is especially important on the east and west coasts of Canada where there is a lot of moisture and salt in the air.

  • Another important piece of advice I give our clients is to take off their jewelry before exercising and going to sleep. In our sleep we move around a lot, we perspire, we get caught up in blankets, etc. This can be very hard on the structure of the jewelry, making the pieces more susceptible to breakage. While at the gym rings can be bent while using machines and weights. We also perspire at the gym, so it is best to remove jewelry to help keep its beautiful lustre.

  • Our 14k gold-plated and electroplated pieces in our line are best cleaned only with gentle soap and water. They should be dried with a soft cloth immediately. I always place all the pieces in small plastic bags inside our cloth jewelry bags so that the pieces do not get scratched and are kept away from moisture. Following these steps will prolong the life of your pieces and keep them looking shiny and stunning for years to come.

  • Lastly I want to discuss fine jewelry. When it comes to cleaning your engagement rings and other fine jewelry such as necklace, rings, earrings, bracelets, I always tell people to use gentle dish soap and warm water in between your professional jewelry cleanings. I think it is best to soak the ring for 30-45 min. Please do not use any brushes to clean your rings, as they can easily scratch them. There is always the option of jewelry cleaners, but I am hesitant to say to use these. The only ones I would ever suggest using are non-chemical and non-abrasive. Even then, you must be very careful.
